A selfless and honorable act by a homeless Philadelphia man is being returned a thousand-fold, ever since word began spreading about his late-night encounter with a stranded motorist.
The incident occurred one night last month when 27-year old Kate McClure was heading to meet a friend in downtown Philadelphia. She was racing against an empty tank, which she ultimately lost, and found herself stranded off a freeway exit.
A gas station was just a few blocks away, so she got out of her car and planned to walk, purchasing the gas with a card since she didn’t have any cash. And that’s when she met Johnny Bobbitt.
Johnny, a Marine Corps veteran who worked as an ammunition technician, lives in an encampment underneath the freeway exit.
After seeing Kate exit her car, he urged her to get back in, lock the doors, and wait for him to return. He was concerned for her safety walking to the gas station alone. Minutes later, this incredible man returned with gas that he purchased using the last $20 he had.
Kate and her boyfriend, Mark D’Amico, were so touched by Johnny’s selfless act that they returned to the encampment and dropped off gift cards, cash, and other items in the following days.
But ultimately, they decided that wasn’t enough. So they set up a GoFundMe account to help Johnny get back on his feet, and the response has been phenomenal. People from all over have donated more than $380,000– a number which is steadily growing!
Johnny plans to use part of the money to cover his living expenses, but he’ll pay it forward as well, with plans to donate to organizations that work to help the homeless.
“This money was given to help me. Why not help other people in similar situations or people that are actively helping other people in different situations?” he said. “Everybody out there is facing some kind of struggle, so if I can touch their life, the way mine was touched, (it’d be) an amazing feeling. I want to feel the feeling on the opposite end.”
