Man Turns Boring Shipping Containers Into Luxurious Desert Home.

Ever since they were first constructed, shipping containers have largely had just one use: shipping things.

But lately, they’ve taken on many other shapes, from restaurants to bona fide residences. Predominantly looked to for their simple design, incredible durability, and low cost, shipping containers are easy to repurpose. Nowadays, though, some building designers have flipped the script and seriously upped the luxury factor.

London-based architect James Whitaker, of Whitaker Studio, is one of those people.

James’s client, an unnamed film producer, took some friends out to his 90-acre Joshua Tree, California, property earlier this year. Seeing inspiration in the desert landscape, one of the friends suggested he get in touch with James about building a structure similar to one he’d designed, but never built, years prior.

He told us, “The picture was of an office that I’d designed several years ago but had never been built. And so it came to pass that next time the client was in London he got in touch and asked to meet up.”

Since that meeting, they’ve been designing the home from the outside in and construction is set to begin next year.

The 2,152-square-foot home will feature solar panels over the garage’s roof, powering the house, a kitchen, living room, and three en-suite bedrooms.

“Each container is orientated to maximise views across the landscape or to use the topography to provide privacy, depending on their individual use,” James says.
